What do you want to learn more about?

March 30, 2010 by Austin Hallock

My last post didn’t seem to be that big of a hit — maybe that’s because you all could care less about mod_rewrite.

What would you like me to write an informative post on? If you have any ideas for some sort of script like the overlay box and banner creator, let me know and I can do that too.

Post your suggestions in the comments section.

Thanks!

P.S. just so this post has some sort of content, here’s a picture of my newly acquired living room furniture….

would like to know how to add pages to an existing web site…probably simple yet has me stumped.

    • Austin says:

What kind of pages are you looking to add jeananne? It depends a lot on if you have a script already etc…

But the most basic answer to that is you can create them in cpanel (assuming that's what you have), in the file manager

I'm planning to do something Live and I want it to go Viral – I know U have a lot of Web2.0 sensibilities Is that something U can Help implement so we can manage the Backend??

AJAX – I would like to learn more about using AJAX, especially using it to process multiple things at once.

I would also like to know how to authenticate new members using Twitter, OpenID and Facebook. So if someone wants to register at my website using say "Facebook Connect" they can.

Oh and I forgot to mention that I am a Huge fan of usable code snippets. There are many placed to get simple snippets like color pickers and autocomplete codes but maybe you could think up some cooler ways to say use ajax to log someone into your site or a how to create your own static "toolbar" at the bottom of your site that when a mouse hovers over a twitter or facebook icon the pop up appears with your latest tweets or wall post.

sorry for the rambling but that's the kind of stuff I really like to see.

The problem with creating an ajax login script is to login to different sites there are a ton of variables — not only that, but I don't (and I know most popular websites) don't do their login with ajax simply because there is too much to update in the page (pages for a logged in user look far different from one not logged in), so it's simpler to just do a standard login with a form and post.

You might be going somewhere with the toolbar thing. I know there are a lot out there like: http://bar.meebo.com/ but helping people in creating their own custom ones (with a text ad perhaps) might end up being a post.

Excellent on the toolbar, I would love to see how to build one of those similar to meebo. The log in idea just popped into my head at the time but I see your point. I think I saw a site use an ajax powered log in system and thought that would be a cool option but it wouldn't be the best use of ajax. Any keep up the great work.

i will search it on Google to but it interest me how to create a referral system that i can measure with a public counter placed on my site so referrers can see it and manage their own ref clicks or maybe just some simple information about referral links count :) thanks Austin.

    • Austin says:

Again with this, with all the different types of membership scripts out there, it would be hard to do this keeping "in general" in mind. A simple counter might be something that makes its way into a post though

    Hi Austin,
I know I'm kinda late with this but my internet has been down for 3 weeks!!
I would like to know how to make a download page. I did a recipe ebook and don't know how to connect my download to my thank you page.
    Thanks for your help
    Patti Barr/SilverDark

    • Austin says:

Patti, you can upload your ebook as a .zip. Then upload the .zip to the same directory as your thank you page and on the thank you page link to it with Download

That should work for you :)

  12. Hello! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any problems with hackers? My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing a few months of hard work due to no data backup. Do you have any solutions to protect against hackers?
